AGENDA Launches “Journalist Competition on Accessible Elections” along with KPU RI and Indonesian Press Council

On 23 September, the General Election Network for Disability Access (AGENDA) launched its “Journalist Competition on Accessible Elections”, a six-month journalism competition that supports rights-based reporting on disability access in Indonesia’s 2017 regional head elections. AGENDA, in collaboration with the Indonesian General Election Commission (KPU RI) and the Indonesian Press Council, opened the competition to journalists and the public to encourage coverage of the theme “Ensuring Accessible Elections for Persons with Disabilities”.

The launch event brought together 17 media representatives and 23 representatives from civil society and disabled people’s organizations. AGENDA; Ms. Lucia Pietropaoli of Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT); and KPU Chairman Juri Ardiantoro gave opening remarks. Participants then joined a discussion of how to present rights-based media coverage of the 2017 regional head elections, led by AGENDA’s Disability Rights Advisor, the KPU Chairman and the Press Council. KPU’s Chairman formally launched the competition.

The competition will be open from 23 September 2016 until 10 March 2017 to maximize coverage of the 15 February 2017 regional head elections. The competition will offer prizes in three areas of reporting: (1) News reporting for TV, radio, print, and online media; (2) Photo competition for print and online media; and (3) “Opinion” articles for the public.

AGENDA’s “Journalist Competition on Accessible Elections” in Indonesia is funded with the generous support of DFAT’s Disability Inclusive Development Fund.
